Funny Story Review

Hello, all!

It feels like it's been ages. To make a long story short, my nerdybynatureblog.com domain went down the last week of April, and I've been going back and forth with Google Domains ever since. Apparently, it was disconnected somehow and nothing we've done so far has fixed it. So, I'm back to the OG blogger URL until further notice!

But let's talk about good things now, namely Funny Story the latest release by Emily Henry.

Adult - Contemporary

Daphne never knew what a stable relationship looked like until she met Peter. The pair had a movie-worthy meet-cute, and everything took off from there. They dated, fell in love, moved back to his hometown, and are counting the days until their wedding. Or they would be had Peter not returned from his bachelor party admitting his love for his childhood best friend Petra and kindly asking Daphne to move out. Daphne knows no one else in the small Michigan town besides Peter, and can't afford a place on her children's librarian salary, in other words: Daphne's screwed.

They say misery loves company, and Daphne finds hers in Miles Nowak, Petra's ex-boyfriend. Since both their exes are now dating, Miles agrees to let Daphne move in. The pair couldn't be more different: Daphne is buttoned-up and loves a schedule, and Miles is scruffy and has a thing for sappy love ballads. But things get complicated when they receive invitations to Peter and Petra's wedding, and Daphne tells Peter that she and Miles are now dating. Thinking it would be fun to show their exes what they're missing, Miles agrees to the scheme. There's no way he and Daphne could ever fall for one another for real, right?

I knew right from the jump that I was going to love this. A forced proximity-roommates-fake dating situation written by Emily Henry? I mean, come on. There was no doubt I would be obsessed, and I was. Daphne and Miles quickly became one of my favorite EmHen couples. I loved them so much, but I couldn't tell you why. Their relationship just felt so authentic. They were so different, but balanced one another perfectly. They both had issues and insecurities and watching them figure their baggage out to be what the other needed was so good. There were some miscommunication moments--my least favorite plot device--but the payoff at the end was worth it. As always, this glittered with EmHen's signature banter, and I adored all the secondary characters. It's made its way into my top three of her books; I loved it.
