The Crimson Moth Review (The Crimson Moth, #1)
Hello, all!
The Crimson Moth by Kristen Ciccarelli (or Heartless Hunter as it's known here in the US) reminded me how much fun YA fantasy can be.

Most would describe Rune Winters as a vapid socialite who likes to spend her nights drinking and gossiping in crowded ballrooms. Rune plays up this narrative because she knows if the truth about who she is ever came to light, it would mean her death. Years ago, Rune's land had a devastating uprising, and those with magic were executed, including Rune's grandmother. Ever since, Rune has had to hide that she's a witch and has devoted her time to saving others like her undercover, earning her the nickname the Crimson Moth.
When a rescue attempt goes wrong, Rune decides the only way to get the intel she needs and to keep the witch hunters off her trail is by getting closer to the enemy. Gideon Sharpe is notorious for his loyalty to the revolution and hatred for witches. He's also Rune's best friend's brother and her best chance at rescuing her people. Gideon isn't one for glitz and ballrooms, but when he learns the Crimson Moth is using Rune's supply ships to smuggle witches, he decides to court her right back. Neither expected the other to break through their heavily guarded defenses or for real feelings to develop. Can these two enemies put their differences aside for true love?I was hesitant going into this because I'm not familiar with The Scarlet Pimpernel, which is what it's loosely based on, but I don't think you necessarily need to be. The premise of a witch and witch hunter falling in love gave me Serpent and Dove vibes, and I liked that series, so I was excited to see Ciccarelli's take on it. I enjoyed our two main characters but thought the romance needed work. I liked their banter, but the chemistry was lacking. Aside from that, I had some other issues. The pacing was slow and repetitive, and there could've been more worldbuilding, and so much of the plot was predictable. The use of magic also made me uncomfortable because it's self-harm, and I feel like there could've been a better source of their power. Despite the chaotic ending, I was still entertained and will likely pick up the second book.
