The story always begins beneath the yew tree with a knight and a historian. Growing up, Owen loved hearing stories about Sir Una Everlasting, the steadfast knight who helped shape the land of Dominion into what it is today. It was her courage and steadfastness that inspired Owen to enlist and fight for his country, though his talents lay more with academia. Despite his cowardly demeanor, Owen was a good soldier, but it was his knowledge of stories that would change his world forever.

After the war, Owen dedicated his time to working at the university when he came across a mysterious book that told the story of Una Everlasting. When the book is stolen from Owen's home, he's brought before the Minister of War, who pleads with Owen to help Una find her way. Through an unexplained force connected to the book, Owen is transported into Una's time, where he must ensure the knight meets her untimely fate, even if it breaks his heart.

If you enjoyed Harrow's short story, The Six Deaths of the Saint, you'll love this book. I'm always wary of time loop/travel stories since they can get repetitive, and this one did slightly, but Harrow made each timeline feel nuanced and new. Her writing was lush and transportive. I felt so attached to Owen, Una, and their story. In each iteration, you see them grow closer as their fates intertwine. Although this isn't a particularly long book, its slow pacing makes it feel timeless. Normally, I'm not a fan of slow pacing, but it worked here. I did guess the plot twist, but still enjoyed seeing Harrow bring it all together. The atmosphere was stunning, the characters intricate, and the plot captivating. I loved it.
