Princess Clía knows her purpose in life is to make an advantageous marriage for her kingdom. The logical choice for her future husband is Prince Domhnall. Their kingdoms are neighbors and they've been friends since childhood. They may not love each other, but surely feelings can develop over time. But Clía's carefully laid plans go to waste when Domhnall refuses to propose citing that his kingdom needs a warrior queen and that is not Clía.

Heartbroken and embarrassed, Clía is determined to change Domhnall's mind by proving to him that there's more to her than pretty dresses and gossip. Clía follows Domhnall to Caisleán Cósta, the strict military academy he's attending, to show him and everyone else that she has what it takes to become a warrior. But it doesn't take long before she realizes she's in over her head. As Domhnall's guard, Ronan can't allow his focus to slip, but he can't help the pull towards Clía. When he offers to train her, he was just looking out for her well-being, but soon neither can deny the growing attraction between them. Clía was only looking to secure a marriage proposal, but with the threat of war looming, instead she finds a deep well of strength inside her that she didn't know existed.

I hate to say this, but I didn't have high expectations for this. I figured it was just going to be another fluffy fantasy with no depth like previous books by TikTokers I've read. I'm delighted to report that wasn't the case here. I was so impressed and surprised by this book. The characters were fully developed and I felt so connected to them. Clía starts out a little vapid and naive, but she is a forced to be reckoned with by the end. I loved seeing her grow and shed all the preconceived notions and turn into a strong badass who can stand her ground. I'm also a sucker for a training trope, so I loved seeing the dynamic between her and Ronan grow from allies to something more. I liked watching both of them open up and learn to trust each other. The plot was also super well done. There were betrayals and court politics and legendary objects. It may have been on the slower side, but there was never a dull moment. I'm hoping this will be a series because I need more from this world.
