Let's Talk: Halloween Movies

Every October, I have a little tradition of watching a Halloween-ish movie every night for the entire month. It can be anything from straight up slasher film to campy sci-fi to a Disney Halloween movie. Here are a few of my yearly staples:

Halloween—Lets get the most obvious one outta the way first. Halloween is not Halloween without Michael Myers. Also, one of my neighbors sets up a speaker in their yard that plays the theme music anytime someone walks past and it always makes my life seem a bit more suspenseful.

Hocus Pocus—No surprise here. I love everything about this movie; it’s definitely one of my favorites to watch this time of year. How can you not love the Sanderson sisters? Plus, Thackery Binx, be still my beating heart.

Monster Squad—Whenever I mention this movie to people, I usually get a blank stare in response. I don’t know why more people haven’t heard of it because it’s 80’s gold. A bunch of Universal monsters try to take over the world and a group of horror movie obsessed kids have to stop them, it’s brilliant. Also, it has one of the best lines I’ve ever heard: “WOLFMAN’S GOT NARDS.” Watch it, you’ll see what I mean.

Frankenstein—I’m a huge fan of the original Universal Monster movies and Frankenstein has been my favorite for as long as I can remember. I don’t think anyone will ever be able to play the role of the monster as well as Boris Karloff.

Young Frankenstein—How can I mention Frankenstein without throwing this gem in as well? Gene Wilder is perfection, and I can’t help but quote along with this entire movie, maybe that’s why no one likes to watch it with me.

Evil Dead trilogy—Oh Bruce Campbell, you wonder of a man. There’s nothing better, in my opinion, than really campy horror movies; there’s just something about them that I can’t get enough of and these movies are the cream of the crop for me. You can’t tell me that watching Ash cut off his possessed demon hand with a chainsaw, then replacing it with said chainsaw doesn’t make for good entertainment.

Creepshow/Creepshow 2— I mainly like these because they’re made up of a few movies, so you never have to worry about getting bored while watching, and I’m a fan of old horror comics as well. Win/win in my book!

Beetlejuice— Another classic. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who doesn’t like this movie. It’s so good, and young Alec Baldwin is a babe.

The Exorcist—This is probably the only movie I’ve ever watched that has really freaked me out. The first time I ever saw this was at a friends house and halfway through all the power in her house went out and I was sure we were going to die.

The Shining—Jack Nicholson you creepy, creepy man.

What are some of your Halloween favorites? Let me know!

  4. Definitely The Fog and The Shining. I have never seen The Exorcist- I freely admit I don't have the nerve to watch it. How about Magic starting Ann Margaret and a young Anthony Hopkins? Nothing creepier than a ventriloquist 's dummy!
