Mini Thoughts
Hello, all!
I saw this title and synopsis and added it to be TBR so fast. What a wildly fun time. Annie was a badass and had me going, "Good for you" the whole time. She has this unfair reputation around her town for things out of her control, which led to her getting dismissed when things went sideways, and I was rooting for her every step of the way to take her revenge. It was so entertaining watching her wreak havoc and mayhem around her town. Some twists were predictable, but the writing and plot were so engaging that I didn't mind. If you want a ghost story with some bite to it for the spooky season, I can't recommend this one enough.

The Bloodless Princes- Charlotte Bond: It's been three years since Sir Maddileh's and High Mage Saralene's resurrections, and it's becoming clear that something has gone wrong. The previous High Mage cursed Saralene, and the only way to break it is by venturing into the underworld and appealing to the Bloodless Princes who rule over the dead. With Saralene's life on the line, Maddileh does the unthinkable and allies with the White Lady, the fearsome dragon she previously fought and left in an enchanted stasis. Will this unlikely trio be able to navigate the dangers of the underworld and its fickle rulers before it's too late?
I enjoyed the previous book, but I loved this one. We got a deeper look into the lore and history of the world, which I found so interesting. It helped to flesh everything out more. I also liked the quest aspect more in this one and thought the comparison to the myth of Orpheus was spot-on. Having Maddileh and Saralene team up with Mienylyth, the White Lady dragon was so fun. Watching them get over their issues and work together was entertaining, and I loved how they sort of bonded by the end. It didn't hurt that Mienylyth's cat/dragon form was also totally adorable. I had the same issue as with the first book, where the pacing seemed rushed at the end, but overall, I thought this was a solid read.

Holding the Reins- Paisley Hope: After finally leaving her cheating fiancé, Cecilia “CeCe” Ashby finds herself back in her small Kentucky town, living in a cabin on her family's equestrian ranch. CeCe is unsure of what to do now and is in dire need of direction, so when Nash Carter offers her a job, she can't refuse. As a retired hockey star, Nash has become somewhat notorious around town. Whether it's helping teach kids at the state-of-the-art sports complex he built, slinging sangria over at the only good bar in town, or for the gaggle of women throwing themselves at him. Nash has been best friends with CeCe's brothers for years, so he thinks nothing of offering her a job, but the more time they spend together, the more Nash starts to view CeCe as more than the annoying young girl he used to tease. The pair know getting together would be a bad idea, but neither can deny the spark and maybe love is worth the risk.
I've been in my small-town romance era this year, and this sounded too good to pass up. I thought the characters and setting made the story. CeCe was fun and feisty, and I liked how she stood up for herself. Nash was commanding and vulnerable, and I'm always a fan of an MMC who is gone for the FMC. He had some demons from his past, but he put the work in to become the man CeCe needed, and I liked watching their relationship blossom. As mentioned, I also loved the setting. It felt like your stereotypical small Southern town where everyone is in everyone's business, and gossip spreads like wildfire, but it was so fun. Hope's writing felt similar to Tessa Bailey's in that it was both raunchy and ridiculous in equal measure. Some moments felt a little clunky, but you can tell there's real potential, and I'd recommend checking it out if you're a fan of the brother's best friend trope. While it's not a new favorite, I'm excited to check out the rest of the series.

Here Lies a Vengeful Bitch- Codie Crowley: Annie Lane has a reputation around town for being a bad girl. She smokes, hangs around with the wrong crowd, and she's mouthy, but that doesn't mean she should be killed. After a night out, Annie wakes feeling strange but can't quite figure out why. Then she finds her body dumped on a mountainside and realizes the rumors about it raising the dead are true. Annie's memory of that night is fuzzy, so she doesn't remember who killed her. But she knows one thing: she'll stop at nothing to find them and make them pay because the only way a girl like her gets justice is by taking it for herself.
