Music was always a big part of Joni Lark's life growing up. Whether it was blasting pop hits with her best friend or swaying along to the beat at her parents' music venue, Joni always felt a deep connection to the chords and melodies that make a song a hit. Now, a successful songwriter in LA, Joni is burnt out. Whatever connected her to the music is gone, and Joni is left feeling empty. She's hoping her yearly trip back home to the sandy shores of North Carolina will help her get her mojo back, but when she arrives, nothing is how she thought it'd be. Her mother's illness is getting worse, her best friend seems to be keeping something from her, and worst of all, her parents are closing her beloved haven.

When she feels all hope is lost, Joni hears it. A half-formed melody swirling around her brain. But with the melody comes a voice Joni doesn't recognize. Sebastian Fell spent his teen years as the bad boy in a pop band, but has spent the last decade or so flying under the radar. After a disastrous first encounter, Joni and Sebastian become telepathically linked and decide the only way to get out of each other's heads is if they finish the song together. But when Sebastian arrives in Vienna Shores, it's clear their connection is deeper than either imagined.

My favorite thing about Poston's books is the magical realism element. I loved the premise of this one and thought it worked so well. I liked both our main characters and loved seeing them form this deep connection with one another. I thought they balanced each other out perfectly. I loved how music brought them together in such a special way. Both Joni and Sasha understood each other on a deeper level, and I enjoyed watching them support one another through their struggles. This book also deals with some heavier topics, and I thought the depiction of grief was handled in such a beautifully real way. It's easily my new favorite of hers, and I can't wait to see what she comes out with next.
