The Stolen Life of Colette Marceau Review

Hello, all!

Let's chat about The Stolen life of Colette Marceau by Kristin Harmel.

Pub Date: 6-17-25
Adult - Historical Fiction

Colette Marceau grew up believing she was descended from Robin Hood and, taught by her mother, adopted a family code: steal from the cruel, give to the needy. During World War II, she and her mother used these skills to fund the French Resistance—until one night, everything changed.

After her mother’s execution, Colette lost her family and the jewels hidden for safekeeping. Decades later, she has used her skills to support charities, determined to leave the past behind. But when a missing bracelet resurfaces, Colette pursues the truth behind her sister’s fate, forcing her to confront old wounds and find strength she never expected.

I've never read anything by this author before, but now I want to read everything. I loved this. I was immediately sucked into Harmel's storytelling. I liked how she utilized dual timelines. It helped get a clear picture of what transpired all those years ago and how those events play into what's happening in the present. The whole Robin Hood element was also a fun touch. I thought Colette was a fascinating main character to follow. She had such conviction that I found it admirable. There were also so many emotional layers to this book. From the war, to thieving, to unraveling the mystery of Colette's missing sister, I was gripped the entire time. There's also a romance at the end that I thought was the perfect addition. Overall, I found this to be beautifully moving, and it'll be one I recommend for a while.
